What did not change was the nation’s love for confectionery. Americans continued to treat themselves and others during seasonal and everyday occasions. Confectionery set new dollar sales records in 2022 — with gains far ahead of most other categories in the store. To maintain this strong momentum, NCA’s 2023 State of Treating report aims to bring a deep understanding of the confectionery consumer and market drivers to get a read on future patterns and demand.

Legislation requiring front-of-package nutritional labeling (FOPNL) information for foods high in sugar and salt is being widely adopted around the world. These country reports assess the landscape by identifying current FOPNL regulations, assessing the future of FOPNL legislation and highlighting future potential regulatory dangers for the chocolate & confectionery industry. The report is taken from NCA’s Global Confectionery Report on Front-of-Pack Labeling Initiatives.

This country report includes analysis of how 500 consumers in each country responded to a survey on their chocolate & confectionery purchasing habits and how these are likely to be impacted by regulatory initiatives such as FOPNL. The report also includes a number of themes coming from a range of expert interviews conducted with confectionery manufacturers, retailers, policy makers and other representatives from the confectionery industry.

The report begins with a Global Executive Summary of findings and continues with an examination of each country specifically through the survey results and expert interviews.

Chocolate represents 60 percent of the $35 billion U.S. confectionery industry. Ranging from iconic brands to products made by micro producers, chocolate is a consumer favorite — enjoyed across ages, incomes, ethnicities and regions. But much like food choices in general, chocolate habits and preferences are changing. For one, the very different confectionery preferences among Millennials is fueling a surge in demand for flavor, ingredient and texture innovation. Additionally, megatrends, such commitment to wellbeing, convenience and transparency are driving innovation in sourcing, packaging, branding and more. This study aims to help the chocolate industry better understand the varying wants and needs among U.S. chocolate consumers.
