Mount Laurel, NJ — Mantrose-Haeuser Co., Inc. is introducing MantroShield, a line of fat-free encapsulated acids for use in gummi applications. According to the company, the line is designed to provide a better method for achieving the balance of sweet and sour in gummi confections.

The company claims conventional encapsulation methods can mute flavors, require higher ingredient usage, and complicate labeling.

Key benefits of MantroShield include:

  • Enhanced Flavor Intensity: The absence of fats and oils allows for a sharper, more pronounced sour flavor.
  • Lower Usage Rates: The formulation enables producers to achieve desired flavor profiles with less acid.
  • Extended Shelf Life: Improved stability to maintain freshness and flavor for a longer duration.

Israel — TIPA Ltd. is launching an advanced home compostable metallized high-barrier film. The solution addresses challenges in eco-conscious packaging for chips and salty snacks, offering enhanced functionality and durability in a biodegradable solution.

The 312MET Premium film is a lightweight, ultra-thin metalized solution designed for high barrier protection against salt, oil, and moisture. The company says these barrier properties eliminate the need for an additional sealing layer, making it highly efficient for converting and versatile for various applications.

This film, when paired with cellulose or paper layers, is one of the market’s thinnest 2-ply home compostable solutions for chips and snacks, the company claims.

Suitable for packaging chips, snacks, granola bars, grains, coffee, and tea, the film offers exceptional freshness and extended shelf life while maintaining an eco-friendly end-of-life.

“Packaging chips in compostable materials has long been a formidable challenge due to their corrosive properties,” says Rodrigo Castaneda, VP/GM TIPA North America. “With our high-barrier film, we’re taking a step forward in reducing plastic waste, while ensuring snack brands and consumers have a viable, thin, high-performance sustainable alternative.”

Mierlo, The Netherlands — GNT has added its first paprika emulsion to its plant-based Eeberry color portfolio to achieve clean-label orange shades in food applications.

Shade Vivid Orange is a water-dispersible color made from non-GMO paprika. It has a high color intensity that allows for cost-effective low usage levels and can deliver bright shades in food products including confectionery, dairy, bakery, and plant-based meat, the company says.

It can be used to replace paprika oleoresin emulsion (E 160c) and Sunset Yellow (E 110) while supporting completely clear and clean label declarations. It is created using physical processing methods and without chemical solvents. As a result, the company says it is classified as a food ingredient rather than an additive in many parts of the world and does not require E numbers. It can be described as “paprika oil” under EU and Chinese regulations and “paprika oil emulsion” in Australia and New Zealand. In the U.S., it is listed as “paprika (color).”

GNT Product Manager Frank Engel says: “There is growing global demand for cost-effective, high-performing coloring ingredients that deliver bright orange hues. We are delighted to now be able to provide an ideal solution in Exberry Shade Vivid Orange. The new color fits perfectly with our commitment to delivering 100% plant based, non-GMO, responsibly sourced coloring ingredients, made using the most natural processing methods possible.”

Gilbert, AZ — Wisdom Natural Brands, parent company of SweetLeaf natural sugar substitutes, has purchased Canada-based Drizzle Honey, a provider of sustainably sourced honey products. The company says the transaction adds a complementary line to its natural sweetener portfolio.

Drizzle produces 100% pure, unprocessed, bee-friendly honey sourced exclusively from beekeepers who place their hives away from synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Products include white raw and golden raw honeys; raw honey infused with organic superfoods such as ginger, turmeric, cacao and berries; and craft products such as cinnamon-spiced honey and hot honey infused with spicy crushed chilies — all free of allergens, added sugar, preservatives, artificial ingredients and GMOs.

The line is currently distributed in 1,200 retail stores in Canada and through the company’s online store.

According to Nielsen sales data, honey sales exceeded $1 billion in 2023, marking strong dollar sales growth for the second consecutive year. Organic and raw honey logged double-digit dollar sales gains during 2023, and raw honey accounted for 35% of category volume compared to 18 percent for conventional honey over the same 12-month period.

“Honey fits perfectly into our line of natural sweeteners, and Drizzle Honey adds bonus wellness and environmental benefits by providing raw honey that retains more of its natural nutrients, line extensions with health-boosting superfoods, and sustainable beekeeping practices that are critical to maintaining pollinator populations,” says Michael May, CEO of Wisdom Natural Brands. “It’s an ideal addition to the options we offer to consumers looking for natural ways to sweeten their food.”

Drizzle is a female-founded business that donates 1 percent of profits to pollinator research and protection and achieved Certified B Corporation status in 2019. It was founded by former environmental scientist Aja Horsley, who launched the company as an offshoot of a rooftop beekeeping project.

“We’ve spent the past eight years building Drizzle into a solid presence in Canada, and we knew it was time to expand to the U.S.,” Horsley says. “With its decades-long commitment to natural sweeteners and established distribution of its SweetLeaf products in both natural and mainstream groceries, Wisdom is perfectly positioned to introduce our honey and its unique health and sustainability benefits to U.S. consumers as well as to continue growing our market share in Canada.”

Cerritos, CA — T. Hasegawa USA Inc. recently unveiled two solutions aimed at solving supply issues affecting a range of food and beverage categories. Cocoa Powder Replacer, an alkalized, low-fat cocoa flavor provides a substitute for traditional cacao-based powder and Orange Juice Replacer, is an all-natural product that amplifies and enhances the flavor profile of oranges. The company reports both products enable food and beverage manufacturers to reduce the quantity of raw materials needed in a formula, without impacting the flavor profile.

The company noted that earlier this year, the cost of raw cocoa powder surged to a historic high of nearly $10,000 per metric ton, because of global supply shortages. Severe droughts in West Africa, where most of the world’s cocoa is produced, devastated crops and reduced the global supply of cocoa by almost 11 percent over the past year. The resulting shortages have caused steep increases in the price of raw materials, impacting manufacturing costs for food and beverage brands, and ultimately increasing the cost of products to consumers. In addition to dessert, confectionary and snack categories, cocoa was a featured ingredient in more than 17 percent of sports nutrition beverages and 11 percent of hot beverages launched over the past five years.

“We developed this cocoa powder replacer as a true ‘no-compromise’ solution for amplifying the natural flavor profile of cocoa and producing the same aroma and bold flavor we love in chocolate products while minimizing the amount of raw powder needed,” says Associate Director of Beverage Technology Toshifumi Nozawa.

The Orange Juice Replacer was developed specifically to provide relief for beverage brands that are impacted by Huanglongbing (HLB) also known as citrus greening. This bacterial disease destroys citrus trees such as oranges, lemons, grapefruit, lime and others, limiting production of fruit or yielding fruit that is bitter and unusable for juice production. Citrus greening is becoming a growing problem throughout the world, including North America, causing supply shortages and extreme price fluctuation that impacts food and beverage manufacturers.

“While our technologies optimize the flavor profile and provide a consistently great taste, they also provide price stability,” says Nozawa. “Climate change will continue to pose serious supply chain disruptions in the future, so our latest flavor technologies can help food and beverage brands continue to deliver the high-quality taste that consumers expect at a consistent and competitive price.”

Grand Rapids, MI — Egan Food Technologies is its FlexFeed Dry at this year’s Pack Expo. Designed to handle loose granola, nuts, and other dry ingredients, FlexFeed Dry automates the process of evenly filling baking trays, which can then be racked for baking or further processing.

According to the company, the line has been beta-tested with a 50 percent increase in production per employee each hour and decreased labor requirements by two-thirds.

“We’re dedicated to engineering solutions that grow alongside our customers,” says Mike Sherd, managing partner. “We heard from customers who were ready to move away from hand-panning products like loose granola, but not ready to purchase a multimillion-dollar, continuous-belt oven. The FlexFeed Dry bridges that gap perfectly as an affordable solution to shift away from manual production and toward automation.”

The unit delivers uniform trays at a rate of up to 500 trays per hour, the company claims. The line can be configured after a mixer that delivers product straight into hopper, from which the product is kibbled, elevated, metered, and finally spread evenly into baking trays. An optional tray feeder at the front of the line offers further automation, according to Egan. Alternatively, the line can be configured to deposit dry ingredients directly onto a conveyor belt.

Wigton, Cumbria — Innovia Films, Ltd. is launching an extension of its range of sustainable films marketed under the Encore brand name.

“One big cornerstone of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is the integration of a certain percentage of recycled post-consumer content into plastic packaging. This regulation will have a huge impact on how brands are going to design their packaging and the motivation for this regulation is to reduce the per capita quantity of packaging,” says Simon Huber, managing director Innovia Europe.

“Flexible packaging, being lightweight and highly resource efficient, can help reduce the total amount of packaging being used and has a much lower CO2 footprint regarding transportation than many rigid alternatives. Innovia is working with the whole value chain in initiatives like CEFLEX (Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging) to increase the recycling of this flexible packaging back into film. The inclusion of recycled content in new films is top of the list for much of the industry — moving from a linear to a more circular system,” explains Steve Langstaff, head of recycling.

The extension includes the use of chemical recycled polymer for food contact applications and the addition of mechanically recycled PCR for non-food. Innovia are also working closely with Prevented Ocean Plastic and have developed a film with 30% POP material. In all cases the key functionality of the BOPP remain intact and are comparable to virgin grade materials.

The company notes the environmental credentials of the films can be improved further, by reducing the quantity of fossil-based virgin materials and replacing with bio based polypropylene. In addition, this reduces the carbon footprint of the films further and again with no detrimental effect on film properties, according to the company.

Chicago — Blommer Chocolate Co. is debuting Elevate, a cocoa butter equivalent (CBE) that the company says is designed with innovation and cost efficiency as a high-quality alternative to traditional cocoa butter.

Blommer notes that global cocoa production is down nearly 11 percent this year, reported by the International Cocoa Organization. Scott Funk, senior vice-president of sales and marketing, says: “As the market value of cocoa butter continues to rise, it is exciting to have a product to offer our customers that provides an economically viable alternative without compromising on quality.”

Elevate coatings, which utilize CBE technology, were formulated to seamlessly integrate with cocoa butter, while exhibiting superior bloom resistance, ensuring a longer shelf life and maintaining the visual appeal, Blommer says. The intentional formulation achieves a chocolate-like sensory experience in both flavor release and meltability.

“With access to the most pioneering and advanced ingredient technologies from our parent company, Fuji Oil Holding Group, we can provide the ultimate and consistent solutions to satisfy our rapidly changing consumer needs. This is a game changer, delivering additional value and affordable indulgence for our customers and chocolate lovers in the U.S.,” says Mark Okita, COO and senior vice-president of commercial.

Elevate represents more than just a product line, the company states, adding it signifies Blommer’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and customer satisfaction.
